The 70-180mm F/2.8 Di III VC VXD G2 (model A065) is the second generation "G2" successor to the highly acclaimed A056. The new model retains its fast f/2.8 aperture and 180mm telephoto, while achieving the world's smallest size and lightest weight in its class.
The optical design has been completely reworked to maintain the highest level of mobility. The precision combination of special glass, including XLD and LD lens elements, delivers uncompromising optical performance throughout the zoom range. With the 70-180mm f/2.8 G2, TAMRON has pushed rendering performance and miniaturization to the limit - advances that enhance the pleasure of capturing the world around you.

Fast and precise AF and improved tracking performance plus VC mechanism

The AF drive continues to use the VXD4 linear motor focusing mechanism, which combines class-leading speed and precision for fast and accurate focusing. The precise calculations used to update the 50-400mm f/4.5-6.3 (A067) and 150-500mm f/5-6.7 (A057) have been reworked to improve tracking of moving subjects, ensuring you never miss the action, whether shooting stills or video.
In addition, the 70-180mm f/2.8 G2 is equipped with TAMRON's VC5 mechanism. This suppresses camera shake, which tends to occur when shooting at the telephoto end, during close focusing or in low-light conditions, for sharper results.

MOD of 0.3m opens up new possibilities

Shooting at close distances, which was only possible with manual focusing with the 1st generation model, is now possible with autofocus with the 70-180mm f/2.8 G2. TAMRON has succeeded in reducing the MOD to 0.3m at 70mm. At 70mm, the working distance is 12cm and the maximum magnification ratio is 1:2.6. This expands the possibilities for expression with a single lens.

Compatible with TAMRON Lens Utility software

The 70-180mm f/2.8 G2 is compatible with the TAMRON Lens Utility software developed by TAMRON. TAMRON Lens Utility allows users to change lens settings, assign camera body functions and update firmware when necessary. Users can customize functions for different shooting styles in still photography and video for a more personalized and fulfilling shooting experience.

VC (Vibration Compensation)

Vibration Compensation – Tamron-developed image stabilization that compensates for unwanted camera movement for sharper images. Shutter speeds of up to 5 EV stops slower are possible with the VC image stabilizer.

Internal Focusing (IF) System

Internal Focus – Internal focusing prevents the barrel from extending and rotating during focusing. The lens is easier to handle and is suitable for use with polarizing or gradation filters.

Zoom Lock (ZL) Mechanism

Zoom Lock – The ZL mechanism prevents unwanted extension of the tube during transport. The lock, which is activated by a switch, protects the lens from damage and at the same time guarantees that it is quickly ready for use.

LD (Low Dispersion)

Low Dispersion – LD elements have particularly low color dispersion index. They reduce chromatic aberrations that appear as color fringes on the contrast edges and reduce image sharpness.

XLD (Extra Low Dispersion) Glass

BBAR G2

Broad Band Anti-Reflection– The BBAR multi-coating ensures brilliant images with natural colors. It reduces the reflection of light rays hitting the lens surface. The more advanced BBAR G2 coating has been used since 2019.

FLR

Fluorine Coating – Fluorine Coating protects the front lens from contamination. It prevents oil and water droplets from sticking to the surface. Fingerprints and dirt are easier to remove.

MR

Moisture Resistant Construction – The lens is splash-resistant. All critical areas have special seals. Lenses with this feature are ideal for outdoor use in bad weather.

VXD Autofocus
